Title: Missional Motherhood: The Everyday Ministry of Motherhood in the Grand Plan of God
Author: Gloria Furman
Brief Description: Umm…I don’t even know. Jesus and motherhood? The title didn’t match what I read. See below for why.

Original Review
I got this book Christmas of 2019. If I’d read it earlier, maybe I would have liked it. But 2020 happened, and not only were there national crises, but we had family ones, too. Because of those I began really sifting through what I believe (not salvation/faith wise, just what evangelicals teach). Anyway, I did not like this book.
First, it’s incredibly wordy. She seemed to like the sound of her sentences more than actual theology. As a mom who has very little peace and quiet (like most moms), I needed her to get to the point. She never really did. Or else it was so hidden I often missed it amongst the chaos around me. I’m all about the concept of missional motherhood – mothering with Christ in mind. But teach me how to keep Him in mind through all the things motherhood throws at me. Pretty sentences won’t cut it at this season of my life.
She also claims motherhood is a spiritual thing, and women who don’t have bio/adopted kids can still be mothers through discipleship. Great! I’m all about that. But most of the examples she used were for women with children. If I didn’t have kids, this would have been an even more worthless read.
And finally, I found it ironic that a lot of what she said had to do with “biblical womanhood” when we were supposed to be basing our behavior on Jesus. You know, who was a MAN. And who MEN are supposed to emulate in the same ways…Anyway, as someone who is questioning this principle, it was fascinating and infuriating to read. She’d constantly make a statement about how motherhood was designed uniquely by God; then she wouldn’t back it up with ANY evidence, or else she listed traits fathers ought to have, too.
So, don’t bother with this one. Find something else.
