“Therefore, behold, I will allure her, bring her into the wilderness and speak kindly to her.  Then I will give her her vineyards from there, and the valley of Achor as a door of hope.  And she will sing there as in the days of her youth, as in the day when she came up from the land of Egypt. ~ Hosea 2:14, 15

Once again, this post contains spoilers from Disney’s 2014 Maleficent.

In my last post, we saw Maleficent’s heart awaken as Aurora showed her how to live and love once more.  Aurora is the savior Maleficent’s heart has been yearning for – a yearning Maleficent didn’t even know she had.

But there is a curse hanging over Aurora’s head – Maleficent’s curse, a curse she cannot revoke.

Just so, Christ shows our broken hearts how to love once more.  He is the Savior we’ve been yearning for – a yearning some of us don’t even realize we have.  And yet, there was a Curse lingering over the head of our Savior, too.  Like Aurora, He did nothing to deserve the curse; but unlike Aurora, He willingly took the curse meant for us upon His own head.  Where Aurora accidently saves, Christ intentionally saves.

Aurora – who has been an accidental savior – needs an intentional savior of her own.

For she doesn’t know that she is cursed, and the one who cursed her is her “fairy godmother” (an identity Aurora gives Maleficent when they first meet).

Maleficent knows, and her heart is heavy with the knowledge.  Indeed, she intended the curse to be impossible to break, for she does not believe in true love.

And then, a shift occurs.  As they explore the moors together, Aurora asks Maleficent why she doesn’t have wings like the other fairies.  Maleficent’s answer is curt and to the point – her demeanor forbids more questions.

But Aurora doesn’t heed Maleficent’s bluster (just as Christ doesn’t heed ours!).  She asks the most innocent of questions: what color were they, and were they big?

They are simple enough questions, but they bring memories back to Maleficent – good memories.  Memories of who she’d been before her identity was so brutally taken.  Memories long forgotten and buried.  Memories of strength, identity, beauty…

Your Identity

Do you remember who you were before the world took your identity?  Or have you lost yourself somewhere along the way?  What were you like before the world became a darker place?

I exhort you to remember – even if it causes you pain.  For, as Maleficent learned, remembering who you were is the first step in restoring what was taken from you.

With Aurora’s simple questions, Maleficent remembered her warrior maiden’s heart – and it helped her become the Warrior-Lover Aurora would soon need…
